Thursdays at the Fed

The Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs, or as we call it, the Fed, has been the home of the Austin Swing Syndicate since 1999 (the building has been around since 1931!). Our Thursday night dance is one of the longest, most well attended weekly swing dance events in the country! We host intro classes every week and you never need a partner. Most Thursdays we have 2 rooms for dancing! The second room is called the “side room,” and the music and dance style changes depending on the week.

8:00 – Midnight
8:15: Free intro swing class
8:15: Free intro side room classes
$3 members / $6 non-members (regular nights)
$7 members / $10 non-members (live band nights — see our Facebook page for updated event information)

What You Can Expect

Unless this is a special event, you can expect to dress comfortably — jeans, t-shirts, and tennis shoes are fine for your first time out. The Fed is a safe, family-friendly environment. We pride ourselves on being a very diverse group. On any given night there may be over 300 people. While the highest percentage of people are approximately age 22-29, the ages range from middle school and high school students on up to people in their 50s, 60s, and above.

The Side Room

Various forms of swing dances are taught and danced in our side room. After each of these lessons, music that easily lends itself to the practice of that dance is played throughout the evening.

1st Thursdays – Blues Class and Dancing
2nd Thursdays – Balboa Class and Uptempo Dancing
3rd Thursdays – West Coast Swing Class and Dancing
4th Thursdays – Collegiate Shag Class and Uptempo Dancing
5th Thursdays – Soul Class and Soul Music
