Mailing Lists
There are a number of locally maintained mailing lists that you can subscribe
to if you want to keep abreast of the current swing happenings, or to discuss
swing-related issues. Be sure to read the list FAQ before
posting!
Note: Although these mailing lists are maintained by Syndicate
members, the Austin Swing Syndicate is not responsible for the maintenance
or content of the lists.
AustinSwing
The AustinSwing list is a moderated, news-oriented list for announcing
swing happenings around town. Here's where you find out about workshops,
special classes, big dances, parties, and other special events. It's moderated
by Matt and
Jayson.
TexasSwing
TexasSwing is an unmoderated, news-oriented list for Texas-wide swing
events.
SwingTalk
SwingTalk is an unmoderated discussion list. Any kind of discussion
music, dance style, etc. is welcome.

How are these lists different?
The main difference among the lists is that
AustinSwing
and TexasSwing
are meant for news and announcements.
SwingTalk
is a free-for-all discussion list.
How do I subscribe?
Click on the Yahoo! Groups links above to
subscribe, and follow the instructions there.
How do I send messages to the list?
Each list has its own address:
- AustinSwing@YahooGroups.com
- TexasSwing@YahooGroups.com
- SwingTalk@YahooGroups.com
Only subscribers can post to these lists. AustinSwing is moderated, and all
posts are approved by the moderators before going out.
I have something that needs to go to everybody. Can I post
it to all of these lists?
It's okay to send something to both AustinSwing and TexasSwing if you have
to, since not everyone on the one list is on the other. However, please do
not crosspost between AustinSwing and SwingTalk.
I'm getting too much mail! Can't I just get a list digest?
To set yourself for digest mode, go to your Yahoo! Groups page, and use the
drop-down menu to change your list settings. The example below demonstrates
what you would do for your AustinSwing subscription.

How do I unsubscribe?
To unsubscribe, go to your Yahoo! Groups page, and use the drop-down
menu to change your list settings.

Why do I keep getting duplicate messages?
If you have registered with Egroups under a second address (by subscribing
to another Yahoo! Groups group at another time), both addresses will
receive mail. In other words, if you were in as joe@foo.com on the old
Syndicate list, but Yahoo! Groups knew you as joe@bar.com, you will
receive messages at both joe@foo.com and joe@bar.com. Confused? Contact
Matt.
If you are subscribed to multiple lists, you may also be a victim of
cross-posting.
My messages keep bouncing. What's wrong?
Most likely, you're not properly subscribed to the
list, or you're emailing the wrong address.
I'm not getting any list mail. What's wrong?
There are four possible reasons for this:
- You are not properly subscribed.
- Yahoo! Groups is being cranky.
- It's a slow day and no one is posting anything to the list.
- Your ISP is blocking Yahoo! Groups mail.
The last of the problems is hardest to resolve, and you may have to
take that up with your ISP.
If you want to send a test message to the list, please don't send a message
with nothing but "test" in it. Include some swing dance content. You can also
contact Matt or
Jason to make sure you're receiving
mail properly.
What can I post to the different lists?
AustinSwing and TexasSwing:
You can post anything related to swing dance news items, event
announcements, band information, reviews of events, and so forth. Non-swing
posts are strongly discouraged. This includes want ads, personal
attacks, chain letters, "WARNING: SEND THIS TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS"
messages, commercial spam of all sorts, non-swing humor, and offensive
commentary of any kind. (If you wouldn't want your grandmother to see it,
don't post it.) If you must post something non-swing, you are
encouraged to throw something swing-related in, often under the notation
"ObSwing." This stands for "Obligatory Swing."
SwingTalk:
This list is unmoderated, and is essentially a free-for-all. However, keep
in mind the best rules of list behavior. I refer you to
this page on
netiquette, and strongly encourage you to read it closely!
What are the other lists? There are a number of related lists run by
Austinites via
Yahoo! Groups.com.
- LoneStarLindy is the administrivia related to TexasSwing list. Contact
Karin or
Christine to be added
to the list.
- Syndics is the Austin Swing Syndicate officers communication list.
Only officers and committee members can subscribe to this list. Contact
Karin for more information.
- SyndicateDJs is the Austin Swing Syndicate DJs communication list.
Contact Jason Baker for more
information.
Help me! I'm lost! I have to write to SOMEONE!
If you have issues with the way that AustinSwing is moderated, email
Matt or
Jayson.
Please do NOT email the Board of the Austin Swing Syndicate with list
issues. Most likely they cannot help you, and will only become cranky.
